Reformed Audio Presents: D.G. Hart
"I have no doubt that being a confessional Reformed Protestant is hard. It is easier to look at big churches, celebrity pastors, and religiously boisterous politicos as bearing the marks of the coming kingdom. Seeing the world through the eyes of faith, and not being duped by externals or cultural decay requires sobriety, restraint, and patience in ways that conflict with our own desire for either justice to prevail or self to be vindicated."

We have recorded Chapter 6, “The Responsibility of the Church in the New Age”, of D. G. Hart’s remarkable biography of Machen, Defending the Faith: J. Gresham Machen and the Crisis of Conservative Protestantism in Modern America. This very interesting chapter presents Machen’s political views and the parallel forces that he saw operating to destroy American society as well as the church. These forces were centralization of power at the expense of individual expression, a tyrannical bureaucracy that subverted the rule of law, and a preoccupation with unity at the expense of local and individual freedom as well as constitutionalism. This chapter also contains the details of Machen’s final fallout with the mainline denomination, including the formation of the independent missions board and his infamous trial by the New Brunswick presbytery. Anyone interested in the life of Machen or in the relationship between Christianity and society will find plenty of fascinating material in this section of Hart’s book.
