Reformed Audio Presents: Robert Lewis Dabney
"Materialism and atheism will never win a permanent victory over the human mind. The most they can do is to betray a multitude of unstable souls to their own perdition by flattering them with future impunity in sin; and to visit upon Christendom occasional spasms of anarchy and crime. With masses of men, the latter result will always compel these schemes to work their own speedy cure. For, on their basis, there can be no moral distinction, no right, no wrong, no rational, obligatory motive, no rational end save immediate, selfish and animal good, and no rational restraints on human wickedness." - Robert Lewis Dabney
Robert Lewis Dabney (March 5, 1820 – January 3, 1898) was an American Christian theologian, a Southern Presbyterian pastor, and Confederate Army chaplain. He was also chief of staff and biographer to Stonewall Jackson. His biography of Jackson remains in print today. Dabney and James Henley Thornwell were two of Southern Presbyterianism's most influential scholars. They were both
Calvinist, Old School Presbyterians, and social conservatives. Conservative Presbyterians, particularly the Presbyterian Church in America and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, still value their theological writings although both these churches have repudiated Dabney's and Thornwell's beliefs on race and support of Antebellum slavery.
